G205 - Introduction to the English Language

Online / Correspondence
Acquaints the student with contemporary studies of the nature of language in general and of the English language in particular. Not intended for students wanting a course in English as a second language. Note: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

L141 - Introduction to Writing and the Study of Literature I

Online / Correspondence
Introduces students to the study of literature through the reading of classic and contemporary works, including "The Odyssey," "Othello," "The Things They Carried," and "Maus." Students practice specific writing strategies, such as comparison, and focus on their own responses to the texts in short exercises and longer essays. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

L202 - Literary Interpretation

Online / Correspondence
Development of critical skills essential to participation in the interpretive process. Through focused writing assignments, introduces the premises and motives of literary analysis and critical methods associated with historical, generic, and/or cultural concerns. L202 can no longer be used to fulfill the COAS Intensive Writing Requirement. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the English composition requirement.

L204 - Introduction to Fiction

L205 - Introduction to Poetry

L207 - Women and Literature

Correspondence
Issues and approaches to critical study of women writers and their treatment in British and American literature.

L213 - Literary Masterpieces I

Online / Correspondence
Literary masterpieces from Homer through Malory. Aims at thoughtful, intensive reading; appreciation of aesthetic values; enjoyment of reading.

L314 - Late Plays of Shakespeare

Online
Close reading of eight of Shakespeare's later plays . May not be taken concurrently with L220. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

L348 - Nineteenth-Century British Fiction

Correspondence
Forms, techniques, and theories of fiction as exemplified by such writers as Thackeray, Dickens, Eliot, and Hardy.

L354 - American Literature since 1914

Online / Correspondence
Provides an understanding of the pivotal literary innovations and cultural changes during this period. Literary movements such as naturalism, realism, and modernism may be the subject of focus, as might changes in race and gender relations, labor politics, immigration policies, regionalism, and the increasing shift from agricultural to urban economics.

L355 - American Fiction to 1900

Correspondence
Survey of representative nineteenth-century American novels, with emphasis on works of Cooper, Hawthorne, Melville, Twain, James, and Dreiser.

L358 - Twentieth-Century American Fiction

Online / Correspondence
American fiction since 1900, including such writers as Ellison, Kesey, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Doctorow.

L390 - Children's Literature

Online / Correspondence
Historical and modern children's books and selections from books; designed to assist future teachers, parents, librarians, or others in selecting the best in children's literature for each period of the child's life. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

W103 - Introductory Creative Writing

Online / Correspondence
Introduction to the art of creative writing. Short assignments, independent work, and discussion of the fundamentals of writing fiction and poetry. Does not satisfy the Fundamental Skills in English composition requirement for the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences. National award winner. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

W119 - Critical Review Writing

Correspondence
Training in the preparation of critical film reviews. Students must have access to a VCR or DVD player to view films they select from the lists provided. Films are not supplied.

W131 - Elementary Composition

Online / Correspondence
Offers instruction and practice in the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills required in college. Emphasis is on written assignments that require synthesis, analysis, and argument based on sources. Prerequisite: None, but Linguistics T101 is recommended for students who need instruction in English as a second language. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

W202 - English Grammar Review

Online
Provides basic understanding of grammatical terms and principles sufficient to enable students to edit their own prose with confidence. No prior knowledge of grammar is assumed or required. Does not count toward the English major or minor.

W203 - (C) Creative Writing (Dual-Genre)

Online
Exploratory course in imaginative writing. Students concentrate on both poetry and prose for reading and written assignments. All lessons must be word processed. Credit given for only one of the following: W203A, W203B, or W203C. Does not satisfy the Fundamental Skills in English composition requirement for the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word. Prerequisite: English major or English W103 or permission of Director, Creative Writing.

W203 - (A) Creative Writing

W231 - Professional Writing Skills

Correspondence
Designed to develop research and writing skills requisite for most academic and professional activities. Emphasis on methods of research, organization, and writing techniques useful in preparing reviews, critical bibliographies, research and technical reports, proposals and papers. Students must have access to a word processor with a letter-quality, laser or inkjet printer. Prerequisite: Completion of the English composition requirement.

W350 - Advanced Expository Writing

Correspondence
Advanced writing course focuses on the interconnected activities of writing and reading, especially the kinds of responding, analyzing, and evaluating that characterize work in many fields in the university. Prerequisite: Completion of the English composition requirement.
