The IU School of Continuing Studies offers online access to undergraduate courses in a variety of formats to best address student needs. The advantages and parameters for these formats are given below.

Self-Study Courses from the Independent Study Program - Up to One Year to Complete
With self-study courses, you study on your own, but get plenty of individualized instructor feedback. The School of Continuing studies offers more than 120 self-study online courses through its award-winning Independent Study Program.

  • year-round registration
  • up to one calendar year to complete all assignments and exams, with two four-month extensions possible
  • study guide on Web
  • assignment submission via Web
  • exams administered face to face by approved exam supervisors
  • not eligible for federal financial assistance

Important: Although you have up to one calendar year to complete an Independent Study Program course, you are strongly encouraged to work at a steady and consistent pace so that you may complete your course(s) in less time. Many Independent Study Program courses may be completed in as few as four months. To improve exam turnaround time, the School of Continuing Studies is now using priority mail to send exams to and from exam sites. In addition, you may request to have your exams emailed to your exam supervisor in pdf format. See Time Limit to Complete Courses and Exams.

Interactive Courses - Complete in One Semester
(SOI - Semester Online Interactive)
With interactive online courses, you have lots of interaction with your course mates, as well as plenty of individualized instructor feedback. All course work must be completed within one semester. See what’s on the spring 2010 schedule!

  • offered fall, spring, and summer semesters
  • prescribed registration deadlines
  • course work to be completed within one semester; no extensions possible
  • prescribed schedules for submitting assignments and taking exams
  • exams given online (instructors may require supervised exams)
  • extensive use of interactive forums
  • individual and group projects
  • may qualify for federal financial assistance

Campus - Specific Self-Study Courses - Complete in One Semester
(SOS - Semester Online Self-Study)
These are semester-long, self-study courses that are open only to degree-seeking students at selected campuses. See what’s on the spring 2010 schedule!

  • open only to degree-seeking students at IUPUI, IUPUC, and IUE
  • approval to register required
  • offered fall, spring, and summer semesters
  • prescribed registration deadlines
  • course work to be completed within one semester; no extensions possible

  • exams administered face to face on student’s campus
  • may qualify for federal financial assistance
