Registration
What's the deadline to register?
The School of Continuing Studies operates on an open schedule, so you can register at any time and take up to one year to complete your course.

Could you verify my enrollment?
Please contact our customer service department at 800.334.1011. We are happy to mail a proof of enrollment to your home address. If you'd like it sent to another institution, you'll need to let us know in writing (send email to custserv@indiana.edu ).

Costs
How much is the general studies degree?
When you apply to the degree program, you pay a nonrefundable $50 application fee ($60 for international students). After that, the cost for completing the degree depends on how many courses you need to take.

How much do your undergraduate courses cost? Are textbooks included in the cost?
The cost per 3 credit hour course right now is approximately $590 for Indiana residents. Textbook prices vary and are not included in the course cost.

Why don't you notify me when prices increase?
Keep in mind that tuition and fees are updated every July 1.

It is unusual for prices to increase at other times during the year, but as the course catalog and your student handbook state, Indiana University can change without notice statements concerning rules, policies, fees, curricula, courses, or other matters.

Be sure to check the School of Continuing Studies Web site for the most up-to-date price information.

Why do I have a balance due?
You're most likely have a balance due if you paid "old" course or fee rates rather than current rates (for example, you paid the 2008-09 rate instead of the 2009-10 rate). Please contact customer service at 800.334.1011 for assistance.

Textbooks
What are the required textbooks for the course?
To find the books you need, you need to visit the course description page for the course you have registered to take. You can get there by going to the undergraduate courses page, and selecting your course.

You can buy your books at the IU bookstore or from any book source you'd like - just be sure to reference the ISBN number of the book to make sure you order the correct edition.

How do I order textbooks from the IU Bookstore?
Go to www.iubookstore.com. On the left-hand side of the page, you’ll see a box that says Buy Your Textbooks On-Line Today.

  • Under Select Term, choose INDEPENDENT STUDIES.
  • Under Department, choose the subject area for your course (for example, SPAN for Spanish).
  • Under Select Course, choose the appropriate course number (for example, 11S).
  • Under Select Section, choose 1.

A page called Your Customized Textbook List appears.

  • Select View Textbook List in the right-hand box, and then follow the instructions for buying your books.

You can also call the bookstore at 812.856.0298.

Course Completion Times
How long do I have to complete my course?
You have one full calendar year to complete your course. If - after one year - you still need more time, you can buy up to two four-month extensions. See Completion Time Limits for price information.

Is there any way I can finish a course faster?
School of Continuing Studies courses are designed to cover a full semester of material, so it typically takes 12 to 16 weeks to complete a course. We can't guarantee completion in anything under 12 weeks based on our assignment submission and exam policies.

Once registered, you're welcome to let your instructor know you're trying to finish the course in an accelerated manner.

How can I get an exception to your assignment submission policy?
We rarely give exceptions to this policy, but if you have extenuating circumstances that you believe would qualify you for an exception, call customer service department at 800.334.1011. The customer service representative will direct you to the correct individual.

Please note: All appeals must be made in writing to one of our directors.

Why didn't you tell me my course expired?
As noted in your student handbook, you have up to one year from the date you register to complete a course. If you make a note of your registration date, you'll know that your timeout date is one year later.

If - after one year - you still need more time, you are eligible to purchase up to two four-month extensions. See Completion Time Limits for price information.

Grades
What's the grade for my assignment or exam?
The fastest way to find out is to go online.

  1. Log in to Dragon.
  2. Under My Courses, click on the course in question.

Why isn't the grade for my assignment posted?
If you sent your assignment more than 14 calendar days ago and your grade hasn't been posted in Dragon:

  1. Call or email your instructor (during office hours) to make sure he or she got the assignment.
  2. If you can't reach your instructor after a couple of tries, or if there are long and frequent delays in getting your grades, call customer service at 800.334.1011.

Keep in mind that in online courses, your assignments are submitted and returned on the Web, meaning that there are no postal delays. Also, most instructors accept assignments by email. You are encouraged to take advantage of these options.

How long will it be before I get my graded paper assignment sent back?
Here's what happens after your instructor grades your assignment.

  1. Your instructor posts the grade in Dragon.
  2. He or she mails your assignment back to the School of Continuing Studies. Depending on where your instructor is located, the assignment may take several days for the assignment to arrive.
  3. The School of Continuing Studies staff double-checks to make sure that your records are accurate.
  4. Within two days of checking the accuracy of your records, the staff places the assignment in a window envelope and returns it to the address you provided on the assignment cover sheet.

Exam Supervisor/Proctor
Who's an acceptable exam supervisor?
You can ask us to send your exam to

  • an administrator or department within an accredited college or university that monitors examinations on a regular basis (such as a university testing center).
  • a dean or department head at an accredited college or university.
  • the manager, director, or head librarian at a public library.
  • the director of a well-established tutoring or learning center such as Sylvan or Huntington.
  • a high school principal. The exam must be sent to the principal, who may then pick someone else to supervise the exam.

Please note: We do not send examinations to relatives, teachers, professors, high school deans, instructors, or advisors. We never send exams to home addresses.

I can't find an exam supervisor, can you help me?
Send an email to ispexams@indiana.edu. We may be able to suggest an exam supervisor if there's someone in your area who has supervised exams for us in the past.

Since we may not be knowledgeable about your geographical situation, please let us know where you live and any suburbs or cities that are relatively close to you.

Exams
How soon can I submit my exam request(s)?
You may apply to take a midterm (or other nonfinal) exam only after all submissions preceding the exam have been received and recorded and after all but the submission prior to the midterm have been graded. For example, if there are three submissions preceding a midterm, all three must be received and recorded, and the first two must be graded.

You may apply to take a final exam only after all midterms (or other nonfinal exams) have been graded, after all submissions preceding the exam have been received and recorded, and after all but the submission prior to the final have been graded.

How can I get an exception to your exam request policy?
We rarely give exceptions to this policy, but if you have extenuating circumstances that you believe would qualify you for an exception, call customer service department at 800.334.1011. The customer service representative will direct you to the correct individual.

Please note: All appeals must be made in writing to one of our directors.

How do I request an exam?
The best way to request an exam is through Dragon.

  1. Login to Dragon.
  2. Go to My Courses.
  3. In the Course in Progress section, click on the course in question.
  4. Click on Request an Exam. Fill out the request and hit Submit.

Please note: If you want to have your exam sent by courier, you must call 800.334.1011. Customer service will request the exam and take your credit card payment for the courier fee.

How can I find out if you've gotten my exam request?
You can be sure we received your exam request if you submitted it through Dragon. Otherwise, feel free to call customer service at 800.334.1011.

I requested my exam. Can you tell me when it was sent to my exam supervisor?
Your exam will be sent to your exam supervisor only after your instructor has received, graded, and posted the grades for all the preceding the assignments.

In general, the School of Continuing Studies processes exam requests within two-to-three days of receiving them. Since exams are delivered to your supervisor either as a pdf or via priority mail, your exam supervisor should receive your exam within two to four days.

If your exam supervisor has not received your exam after five business days, please call customer service at 800.334.1011.

What address was my exam sent to?
To find out, call customer service at 800.334.1011 or send an email to ispexams@indiana.edu.

I paid to have my exam sent to my exam supervisor by courier, and it hasn't arrived. How can I check on it?
The courier service we used should have sent your tracking number to the email address we have on file for you. Check the courier's Web site for information. If you still have questions, call customer service at 800.334.1011.

I took my exam, and my exam supervisor sent it back to the School of Continuing Studies, but my grade isn't in Dragon yet. Can you tell me where my exam is?
Since your exam supervisor returns your exam to the School of Continuing Studies via priority mail, it should take two to four days for an exam to reach us and be logged into our system. If one full week has passed since you took your exam, please call customer service at 800.334.1011.

How long does it take to get my final grade once I have taken the final exam (or turned in my last assignments)?
We recommend allowing 10 days for the final grade to be posted. This will allow time for the exam to reach us, for the instructor to grade it, and for the instructor to calculate your final grade.
