January 2012
The transfer information on this page pertains to students in the School of Continuing Studies systemwide distance degree programs administered through Bloomington.
With the closure of the systemwide School of Continuing Studies, students in the systemwide (distance) General Studies Degree program will need to transfer to a campus general studies program. As of July 1, 2012, Indiana University East will assume administrative responsibility for the undergraduate independent study courses for the AAGS and BGS degree programs and will continue to deliver the online BGS program.
Registrations in, and purchase of extensions for, undergraduate independent study courses offered through the systemwide Indiana University School of Continuing Studies will end on May 31, 2012. Students who register for courses by May 31, 2012, will have one full year from their registration date to complete all of their course work (including exams).
Register soon to take advantage of independent study's affordable tuition:
In state: $183.07 per credit hour
Out of state: $212.82 per credit hour
IMPORTANT: Courses that are not completed by June 1, 2013, will close, and any course that is not completed by June 1, 2013, will not be considered for academic credit. We will not issue refunds for uncompleted courses.
If you are a student in the systemwide (distance) SCS General Studies Degree program who intends to graduate but who cannot graduate by May 2012, it is crucial that you contact general studies advisor Jim Johnson as soon as possible. Jim will discuss the transfer options available to you and help you get established in a campus program (see below) by July 1, 2012. Contact him at jkjohnso@indiana.edu.
All Indiana University campuses offer the option of completing the Bachelor of General Studies on campus. Only Indiana University East and IPFW are authorized to award a Bachelor of General Studies fully online. Since 2008, IU East has offered online courses specifically for SCS students and will continue to do so. This does not preclude you from taking online courses through any other IU campus.
In-state status for purposes of tuition is determined by the local campus based on university policy.
Students who are unable to attend classes at an Indiana University campus may take semester-based online courses - with set registration, start, and end times - through Indiana University East, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Benefits of semester-based online courses include the following:
No campus offers courses in an independent study format. However, you may be able to complete independent study through other accredited distance programs and apply the credits you earn to your IU program. Consult with the advisor at the local campus to which you transfer.
