This three-course sequence is offered through the School of Continuing Studies in cooperation with the IU Kelley School of Business. The courses are designed for individuals employed in the healthcare field as accountants, account managers, financial managers, or administrators.
All three of the courses are available online, as well as through correspondence.

The certificate program includes three, 3 credit hour undergraduate courses. The courses are:
- A201 Introduction to Financial Accounting
- A233 Intermediate Healthcare Accounting
- A333 Healthcare Budgeting and Cost Analysis

Can I take all three at once?
You may not take all three courses at once. The courses are sequential, meaning that you must complete the first one before starting the second, and complete the second before starting the third.

May I substitute a different course for the first one?
You may substitute a different course for the first one. If you have taken a basic accounting course, you may petition to have it count instead of taking A201. If the instructor approves your request, you do not have to pay for A201. You can start with A233.

Who is the target audience?
The certificate program is designed for individuals employed in the healthcare field as accountants, account managers, financial managers, or administrators.

How do I register?
You can complete the certificate program without being admitted to Indiana University as a degree-seeking student. Fill out the certificate program admission application and send it, along with the nonrefundable $25 application fee, to the address below. To open the admission application (PDF 101KB), you need Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download Reader free of charge at Adobe.com.
To register in the courses, call 800.334.1011, use the registration form in the center of the Independent Study Program catalog, or print out and submit the undergraduate course registration form.

How does independent study work?
You send a lesson to the School of Continuing Studies. The instructor grades it, and it is returned to you with comments and a grade. You can start the next lesson while the first one is being graded. If you have questions, you can contact your instructor by email or phone. When do I get the certificate?
The School of Continuing Studies sends you a certificate by mail after you have successfully completed all three courses.

Can these courses count toward a degree?
You can apply these courses toward an IU associate or bachelor's degree in general studies degrees you can complete entirely at a distance. You may be able to transfer the credits you earn in these courses to other institutions of higher education.

What kind of work and exams are required?
A201 has 9 submissions (course assignments) and 3 exams; A233 has 8 submissions and 2 exams; and A333 has 8 submissions and 2 exams. Make arrangements to take the exams at an educational institution or library near you. The Independent Study Program examination department can help you locate a facility.
