Distance education is a rapidly growing and evolving field. With all the advances in technology, it can only get better.
Are you ready for the challenge?
For more than a decade, the Indiana University Certificate in Distance Education program has given learners in education, business, government, and not-for-profits an overview of how to plan distance education systems and how to develop and deliver high-quality distance instruction.
The IU Certificate in Distance Education program has been revised and reformatted to give participants like you the opportunity to focus in greater detail on the content that most specifically meets your needs. You will explore
- distance education within a variety of contexts
- systematic planning for distance education delivery and evaluation
- the best technologies to achieve your learning objectives
- methods of development and delivery of high-quality instruction
The program's goal is to provide you with an overview of distance education that is applicable to a variety of contexts and encourage you to explore different methods and technologies to support distance learners and instructors.
Designed with adult learning principles in mind, this course encourages participants to share their perspectives and needs and to situate their learning within their organizational context. We welcome opportunities to include participants' past and current experience in planning and development for distance education. The discussion forums in the overview and in both specialty tracks invite you to share your experience and plans for future projects.
The Indiana University Certificate in Distance Education program is offered three times a year—in the fall, spring, and summer. The summer 2010 session will be held June 1–August 5.
The structure of the Certificate begins with an overview of distance education and the technology involved and concludes with two specialized tracks that allow individuals to better focus on their own professional development needs. One track will focus on Systems Planning and Management and the other on Instructional Development and Facilitation. The first three modules comprise the overview of distance education and information communication technologies. The final five modules comprise the specialized tracks. When you register for the course, you choose which track you will complete.
Module Details:
This program is conducted in an online environment so you will need consistent access to the Internet. High speed access is strongly recommended but not required. Communication occurs mainly through asynchronous threaded discussions, however there will be opportunities to experience real-time chat rooms and synchronous interactive video media. Resources include the course text and other online multimedia. You may complete your work at any time during the week; but keep in mind that each module is designed to be completed within the one-week time frame.

The online Certificate in Distance Education does not use a printed textbook. Instead, the program uses a virtual learning guide. All registered students will be able to access this guide once the course begins.
Upon successful completion of eight modules you will receive the Certificate in Distance Education and three continuing education units (CEUs) from the School of Continuing Studies at Indiana University.
The 3 CEUs represent an average of 30 hours engaged in completing course activities (1 CEU = 10 hours).
Important: The Certificate in Distance Education is a professional development program for which no transcripted academic credit is available.
The cost for the Certificate in Distance Education program is $599, which covers all instruction and the virtual learning guide, an electronic textbook you will be able to access for the duration of the course plus two months following completion.
If two or more people from the same organization register, the fee is $565 per person. Registrations must be submitted together.
