01P - Psychology

Online / Correspondence
Acquaints mature high school students with the language and principles of psychology. Emphasizes human behavior. Serves college-bound students as a basis for studying other social sciences; presents to noncollege-bound students valuable information about human behavior and relationships.

01S - Sociology

Online / Correspondence
Topics explored--including socialization, institutions, stratification, and social change--give a sense of sociology's range and development. Emphasizes general social principles at work in diverse cultures.

11W - World History: First Semester

Online / Correspondence
Introductory survey of world history from the first civilizations of the Near East to the English Restoration. Topics include ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation, the Age of Exploration and Discovery, the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions, and England's "Glorious Revolution." Emphasizes European civilization but also looks at contributions from Africa, Asia, and America. Includes some geography study through map use. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

12W - World History: Second Semester (World History and Civilization)

Online / Correspondence
Extends Social Studies 11W through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Studies movements, issues, ideas, and individuals in order to help students understand the modern world and appreciate its problems. Emphasizes European civilization, but also covers the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Maps illustrate political information. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word. Prerequisite: Social Studies 11W or equivalent.

21G - World Geography : First Semester

Correspondence
Introduces the "basics" of geography, including geographical terms and the five themes of geography, and then examines in depth the United States and Canada, Middle and South America, and Africa.

22G - World Geography: Second Semester

Correspondence
Continues Social Studies 21G. Examines in depth Europe, Asia, Australia, the Pacific islands, and Antartica. Prerequisite: Social Studies 21G or one semester of high school world geography.

31A - United States History: First Semester

Online / Correspondence
An introductory study of U.S. history. Surveys chronologically the Age of Discovery and the founding of the colonies, the struggle for independence and the conflicts associated with launching a new government, the rise of nationalism, sectional strife and the Civil War, and the beginning of the Industrial Age. 32A - United States History: Second Semester

Continues Social Studies 31A. A general survey of the United States since the 1890s. Covers the Spanish-American War, the Progressive Movement, World War I, the 1920s, the Depression and the New Deal, World War II, and problems and promises of the United States today. Considerable attention given to contributions of minority groups. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word. Prerequisite: Social Studies 31A or equivalent.

41E - Economics

Online / Correspondence
An introductory economics course. Students learn economic facts and concepts about our society and analyze materials critically and objectively. Surveys the history of U.S. economic processes and compares economic systems. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

41G - United States Government

Online / Correspondence
Studies how people--including citizens and public officials (the president, members of Congress, and Supreme Court justices)--behave politically. Students anaylze case studies in order to demonstrate how individuals affect, and are affected by, the U.S. political system.

51A - AP US History, First Semester

Prerequisites: none. This course, in combination with the subsequent semester (Social Studies 52A) is designed to be the equivalent of a first-year college US history course. It will also prepare students for the AP US History exam given in May of each year. The course will focus on movements, developments, and events that have helped shape the United States from 1500 to 1877. Students will develop skills in critical and evaluative thinking, essay writing, interpretation of original documents and historiography.

52A - AP US History, Second Semester

Online
Prerequisite: Social Studies 51A. This course is a continuation of Social Studies 51A and, with that course, is designed to be the equivalent of a first-year college US history course. It will also prepare students for the AP US History exam given in May of each year. The course will continue the study of US history, focusing on the period from 1877 to the present day. Students will continue to develop skills in critical and evaluative thinking, essay writing, interpretation of original documents and historiography.
