INDIANA HOUSE PASSES RESOLUTION HONORING SCS
On February 23, 2006, the Indiana House of Representatives passed the following resolution honoring the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies. The resolution was entered into the House by Representative Vernon Smith.

Whereas the School of Continuing Studies

  • was created to meet the lifelong learning needs of nontraditional students.
  • is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2005-06.
  • graduated 4,074 students from all eight campuses of Indiana University in 2004-2005.
  • has granted general studies degrees to more than 28,000 students at a distance since 1975.
  • has made a difference in the lives of thousands of students like schoolteacher Emili Dagher, who wrote, "I wish I could meet all my IU instructors to thank them personally for their help and dedication. I'd also like to thank everyone who is part of the Independent Study Program team. Thank you, Indiana University, for encouraging me to become a better educated person!"
  • made Indiana University the first college or university in the state of Indiana to offer an associate and bachelor's degree entirely online.
  • established one of the first accredited distance education high school diploma programs in the country in 1999 and has subsequently graduated nearly 200 high school students, many of whom have continued their education at prestigious colleges and universities across the country.
  • is the academic home of one of the oldest, most respected adult education graduate programs in the United States.
  • is one of the largest distance education providers in the country, offering more than 195 undergraduate courses and more than 100 high school courses.
  • currently offers 65 university courses and 40 high school courses online and continues to add to its online inventory.
  • holds 54 course awards from the University Continuing Education Association and is recognized by its peer organizations as one of the best distance education providers in the country.
  • had more than 17,300 registrations in undergraduate and high school courses during fiscal year 2004-05.
  • has served thousands of learners through noncredit programs such as the Tax Practitioners Institutes, the Certificate in Distance Education, the Certificate in Distance Education Program Advanced Modules, the Health Care Accounting and Financial Management Certificate Program, and the IU/Smithsonian World Affairs Institute.
  • has collaborated with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) since 2001 to deliver training programs to thousands of Hoosiers employed by DWD and its partner organizations.
  • has a long history of serving students abroad in such countries as Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Iran, and South Africa.
  • has served students in all 50 United States and in as many as 55 countries.
  • has a long history of serving students in the military.
  • is committed to diversity: 15.4% of the graduates of the School of Continuing Studies are ethnic/racial minority students.

Be it resolved that

  • the Indiana State Legislature recognize the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies on its 30th anniversary and on its years of service to students in the state of Indiana and beyond.
