The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recognized two Indiana University High School students on their exceptional performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Those students are
- Derek M. Elliot, an IUHS senior who was named a 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student. The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes about 34,000 Commended Students each year for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2008 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students place among the top 5 percent of students who enter the National Merit Scholarship competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT®.
- Veronica R. Sargent, an IUHS senior who was named a 2008 National Achievement® Program Outstanding Participant, and has been referred to colleges by the program. The National Achievement Scholarship Program provides recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Students enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit® Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT® and by meeting other requirements for participation. Of the more than 140,000 students who currently enter each year, 4,600 are honored — 3,000 students are referred to colleges for their potential academic success, and a smaller group remains in contention for Achievement Scholarship awards.
