Willingness to Change Key to Maintaining Partnerships With Government Organizations

BLOOMINGTON—Creating successful and sustainable partnerships between universities and workforce development organizations was the topic of a presentation that Indiana University representatives delivered to a recent continuing education forum in Florida.

John Beeson, director of external relations for the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies (SCS), joined Nate Klinck, SCS director of workforce initiatives, and Mary Jane Brown, director of noncredit programs for the IUPUI Community Learning Network (CLN), to discuss the evolution and success of a partnership among the SCS, CLN, and Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD). “Partnering with government organizations such as the DWD is incredibly rewarding, yet challenging,” said Beeson. “Governments are ever evolving, and for a university to maintain these partnerships long term, they must be ready to evolve, adapt, and remarket themselves as administrations — and priorities — change.”

IU’s partnership with DWD calls upon the SCS to deliver professional development workshops and training programs to DWD professionals. Since 2000, thousands of workforce development professionals in Indiana have participated in SCS programs, helping the DWD to meet and exceed U.S. Department of Labor performance standards.
