IU SCHOOL OF CONTINUING STUDIES SECOND ANNUAL STATEHOUSE VISIT
Indiana University hosted its Second Annual School of Continuing Studies (SCS) Day at the Indiana Statehouse on March 28, 2007.

Continuing Studies representatives from around the state provided exhibits and materials demonstrating how the university-wide school and its campus units advance Indiana’s workforce through the General Studies degree completion program, custom and contract training, and professional and workforce development programs.

Numerous senators and representatives paid tribute to the key role continuing education plays in preventing a Hoosier “brain drain.” Included were Representative Mara Candelaria Reardon, herself an SCS graduate, and Representative Peggy Welch, whose son is currently pursuing his degree through the school.

A lunchtime award ceremony honored current and former employees of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development for their collaborative work with the School of Continuing Studies: Mark Hollman, William Miller, Andrew Penca, and Ron Stiver. A partnership between the two organizations has provided up-to-date training and professional development opportunities to thousands of Hoosiers. Speaking to the noontime audience, SCS dean Daniel Callison praised the collaborative efforts among the eight Indiana campuses, and added a vision for a ninth campus—an IU virtual campus that will tie together online academic and professional development programs from continuing studies units to provide for a new, more diverse menu of educational opportunities for adult learners in the near future.

“ Indiana University has established the content and means to address professional development needs regionally on a face-to-face basis,” he said. “Now, working together, the campuses will enrich these efforts to provide workforce professional development through added online options, leading to an interactive virtual campus available statewide.”
