Semester Online Self-Study Courses
Approved for Specific Campus Sites

Attention degree-seeking students at IUPUI, IUPUC, and IUE!

Take advantage of an exciting and useful new option to meet degree requirements: semester online self-study (SOS) courses from the School of Continuing Studies (SCS).

The courses are approved by their relevant academic departments. They benefit students who need to build flexibility into their schedule, stay on track for graduation, or get that "one extra course" for the coming semester. They are especially useful for students who have a full work schedule or other responsibilities that prevent them from coming to campus frequently.

Items to Note
  • You may register for these courses only if you are a degree-seeking student at IUPUI, IUPUC, or IUE. You must obtain approval. Please include your user ID number in your communications.

  • Before registering, check with your department's academic advisor to see how credits from these courses will apply to your degree requirements. Policies regarding the application of SOS (independent study) course credits toward degree requirements vary across departments. Most departments do not allow credit toward the major or a minor. They allow elective or general credit, but may place a cap on the number of credits allowed. General studies students may take SOS courses with advisor approval, and they may take as many as they can manage as long as the courses fulfill degree program requirements.

  • You register through your campus and pay your campus’s in-state and out-of-state rates.

  • Because these are semester courses, they qualify for student financial assistance.

  • While these courses offer the advantage of online study, the content, textbooks, and assignments are as demanding as any found in a traditional classroom setting. You must understand how to manage your time in order to meet assignment and exam deadlines and to complete all course requirements before the end of the semester. You should work at a weekly pace and not wait until the last few weeks of the semester to submit completed assignments. Late submission of assignments and exams may delay the grading process and prevent you from finishing by semester's end.

  • Exams are administered on campus at set dates. See the IUPUI (spring 2010), IUPUC (spring 2010), and IUE (spring 2010) course syllabi for dates and times. If you cannot come to campus to take the proctored exam on the dates given, please do not register for the course.

  • In addition to the semester courses offered to IUPUI (spring 2010), IUPUC (spring 2010), and IUE (spring 2010) degree-seeking students, the School of Continuing Studies offers more than 180 extended-term self-study independent study courses. Extended-term courses are not eligible for federal student aid, but they provide additional scheduling flexibility. Check with your advisor to find out which courses apply to your academic degree program.

Guide to Success in Online Learning
Students are strongly encouraged to read the Guide to Success in Online Learning (5.5 MB pdf) to help assess their readiness to take a semester online course.

The guide covers that characteristics of a successful online learner, and provide reading, writing, and study tips.

Textbooks
Textbooks for the courses are listed in the IUPUI, IUPUC, and IUE course syllabi. You may purchase your textbooks at your campus bookstore. You may also obtain your textbooks online or through an independent retailer. Be advised, however, that there are multiple editions of the same textbook on the market. Please be sure that the texts you purchase have the same ISBN numbers as those listed in the syllabi.
